Why Steam Holds Your Trade and How to Remove It
Why Steam holds trades for up to 15 days and how to remove the hold: the Steam Guard mobile authenticator, the 7-day wait and item trade restrictions.
A trade hold is a Steam rule: the trade is confirmed, but the items leave after a few days rather than instantly. Steam uses it to protect stolen accounts: the real owner has time to notice the trade and cancel it.
Why a trade is held
- The Steam Guard mobile authenticator is not enabled — trades are held for up to 15 days.
- The authenticator was enabled less than 7 days ago — trades are held until those 7 days pass.
- You recently reset your password, changed account security or signed in from a new device — Steam may restrict trades for a while.
How to remove the hold
- Enable the Steam Guard mobile authenticator in the Steam app.
- Wait 7 days without turning it off.
- After that trades go through without a hold — you only confirm them in the app.
There is no way to speed this up: Steam Support does not lift holds manually.
How to check for a hold
Start creating a trade with any friend: if it would be held, Steam warns you and shows for how long. A held trade appears under Trade Offers with its hold status and can be cancelled until it completes.
Trade hold or item restriction?
They are different. A hold applies to the whole account. An item bought in the Mann Co. Store or on the Steam Community Market has its own restriction: it cannot be traded for 7 days after purchase. The date it lifts is shown in the item description in your inventory.
How long a hold lasts
Up to 15 days. The date a held trade completes is shown in the trade offer. If it is cancelled in that time, the items stay with the owner. Without the authenticator Steam also holds Community Market listings — an authenticator enabled 7 days ago frees them too.
Common mistakes
- Turning the authenticator off when changing phones restarts the 7 days. Move Steam Guard to the new phone through the Steam app without disabling protection.
- Lost access to your phone — recover the authenticator with your recovery code or through Steam Support; after that you will have to wait again.
A hold is not a trade ban
A trade ban is a separate Steam penalty for rule violations or fraud: while it lasts, you cannot trade at all. It shows on your profile and only Steam can lift it. A hold, on the other hand, ends by itself once the conditions above are met.
What our exchange does
If Steam would hold a trade, the bot does not send it, so items never sit in limbo for 15 days. Cancel the transfer in Inventory and retry when the hold is over. Other reasons an offer did not arrive are in the FAQ.
Once trades work without a hold, you can sell TF2 keys or withdraw the ones you bought.
